JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 17-year-old Ribault High School student is facing multiple charges in connection with a deadly double shooting Wednesday morning in Arlington, according to an arrest report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The double shooting was reported around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Square at 59 Caroline Apartments, an apartment complex on Fort Caroline Road in the University Park area.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Chris Stephens said other people were inside the apartment unit when two young men were shot and one of those witnesses called 911. When police arrived, they found the men dead.

According to an arrest report, a 17-year-old from Jacksonville has been charged with car theft, possession of a firearm by a juvenile delinquent, resisting police and possession of marijuana in connection with the double shooting. He has not been charged with the homicides.

Because he is not charged with the homicides, News4JAX is not naming the teen.

A woman in the apartment where the two young men were shot to death told police she heard the door being “rattled” and then six gunshots. She looked out a window and saw another young man walking to a car that was in the parking lot.

Stephens said witnesses described the vehicle the suspect drove away in, which belonged to someone inside the apartment, and officers were able to track it using the vehicle’s GPS.

Officers spotted the vehicle on Broward Road -- which is about 20 minutes from the Arlington apartment complex -- and the driver turned onto Lem Turner Road. When the officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver pulled into a nearby apartment complex, jumped out of the vehicle and ran off into a wooded area, Stephens said.

He was tracked by K-9 Jax, a 5-year-old Dutch Shepherd, and was taken into custody after being bitten by Jax. The teen was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, Stephens said.

Stephens said the vehicle was towed from the Lem Turner scene and that weapons were found inside it.

The motive for the shooting is unclear, but it’s early in the investigation, Stephens said.
