City of Jacksonville hosts informative session on how to prevent hate crimes against places of worship

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The city of Jacksonville will be hosting its first informative session Monday night for faith-based leaders and community members to discuss how to prevent hate crimes against places of worship amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

The “Protecting Places of Worship” sessions — facilitated by the United States Department of Justice Community Service — will call for tough conversations about how to handle hate crimes in places of worship.

There will be two sessions: the first one will be Monday from 5-8 p.m., and the second session is on Tuesday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Both sessions will take place at the Main Library Auditorium on Laura Street.

The sessions will include:

  • Overview of religious hate crimes and laws
  • Tools and resources from federal and local law enforcement to assess the safety of places of worship
  • Overview of active shooter training and situations
  • Best practices for the prevention of and response to hate crimes against places of worship
  • Information about federal grants available to fund security needs at your place of worship

Mayor Donna Deegan is expected to attend and is listed as one of the speakers.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is also attending, as well as community interfaith leaders, and several government agencies including the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
