The average American household spends more than $1,000 a month on groceries

New census data shows the average American household is spending about $270 a week on groceries, or more than $1000 a month. And in Florida, it’s even more expensive, with people here spending $290 a week or $331 with kids. In fact, Florida is the 5th most expensive state to buy groceries.

“I have triplets, and I have a four-year-old and a seven-year-old who are at school right now,” mother of five, Erin Horne, said. When we asked her about her grocery bill -- “Well, it’s really insane!”

Horne saves money with grocery delivery which is a free perk that comes with her credit card. Yes, delivery and curbside pickup can save you on your grocery bill. How? Because you can stick to your grocery list and avoid overspending by picking up extra items you see in the store.

Buying more expensive items in bulk at wholesale stores like BJs, Costco and Sam’s Club is another great way to save.

We asked the mom of five what the most expensive thing she has to buy is. “Milk, we go through gallons and gallons. We probably go through four, maybe five gallons of milk a week,” Horne said.

Another way you can save is to compare prices across different stores and shop the sales. Buy one, get one (BOGO) deals at Publix and Winn Dixie are popular for good reason. You can also consider buying generic products since they usually cost less than the name brands.

Grocery store chain, ALDI, is known for its low prices, that’s mostly because all of its items are private label except for a few name-brand features.

Lastly, cut out the things you can live without.

“This is going to sound so silly, but feta cheese, I don’t even buy it anymore because it’s like $7 for a small thing,” Horne said.
