Pedestrian leaving bus stop dies after stepping into traffic on San Jose Blvd.

San Jose crash (WJXT)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man in his mid-60s was struck and killed on San Jose Boulevard Friday evening in the county’s 17th pedestrian crash.

Around 6:15 p.m., the man was at a bus stop just north of the San Jose Blvd. and Hartley Road intersection and decided to cross the street when the traffic light was red. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the light turned green as the man walked into traffic. He was not using a crosswalk, JSO said.

The outside and middle lanes noticed the man and stopped, but a driver in the inside lane, which also had the green light, did not see the man in the roadway because of a blocked view.

The man walked right into the front of the truck and was hit.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Police did not believe charges would be filed as multiple witnesses saw what happened. The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The investigation is ongoing.

The crash caused significant delays and backups on the roadways, but the roads were reopened by 8:30 p.m.
