While there are a lot of made-up food holidays, National Donut Day does have some historical significance.

The Salvation Army in 1938 established the first Friday in June as National Donut Day to honor women who traveled to France to serve donuts and snacks to soldiers during World War I.

And, donuts have gained popularity ever since. Now there are many traditional and gourmet donuts to choose from.
