TELL US: Do you think a warning label on social media would make a difference in adolescents’ mental health?

The U.S. surgeon general proposed a new measure to tackle the mental health crisis affecting many young people.

Dr. Vivek Murthy said social media contributes to the mental health of younger generations. He called on Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms.

The warnings would be similar to what you see on cigarette boxes that read: “Quitting smoking now. Greatly reduces serious risks to your health.”

Social media use is prevalent among young people, with up to 95% of youth ages 13 to 17 saying that they use a social media platform, and more than a third saying that they use social media “almost constantly,” according to 2022 data from the Pew Research Center.

Murthy said in an opinion piece in The New York Times that a social media warning “would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe.”
