Clouds over Guana River in St. Johns County. (Mark Collins) UPDATE: 7PM Monday...Upland LLC formally withdrew its application for a land swap that would have led to the transfer of Guana Preserve for development.
St. Johns County – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is considering a land swap of more than 3,000 acres of private land in exchange for 600 acres of the Guana River Wildlife Management area in St. Johns County.
The Guana land would go to a developer that could build homes or even a golf course there.
The state-owned land is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission which supports the exchange.
A member of the Audubon society uncovered the land swap deal last week , and since then, there’s been a lot of controversy.
A DEP committee will vote Wednesday in Tallahassee to give the proposal a positive or negative recommendation before it heads to the governor for a final vote.
