PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – The funeral service was held Sunday for a beloved and longtime Palatka Junior-Senior High School coach.
The service was held at Tabor First Baptist Church at 3 p.m.

According to an online obituary, Darrell Polite, Sr., died unexpectedly on Saturday at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital, Palatka. He was 53.
The Palatka Daily News reported that Polite was an assistant coach on the football team and a state champion weightlifter.
Following his death, dozens posted tributes to the beloved coach.
“Darrell was a wonderful man, mentor, and friend to all. He was one of the nicest, most genuine people. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family & friends. We will miss you Darrell!” James A. Long Elementary posted on its Facebook page.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Polite worked as a behavior intervention specialist at James A. Long for nearly three years.
That sentiment was echoed in the comments below the post.
“My kids just told me the news and they are devastated. They both loved Mr. Polite and are in disbelief currently. I just sat and listened to them share stories of Mr. Polite. His impact on not just mine but many children will be a beautiful legacy of all the little lives he has changed and made better. Our community sure did lose a bright light. Praying for his family during this difficult time,” one commenter wrote.
Polite was the owner of a mobile food truck called Big D’s BBQ. He enjoyed cooking, traveling, fishing and being a disc jockey. He was also a member of a motorcycle club.
