Crews locate bodies of 2 men who fell into St. Johns River while trying to retrieve object: police

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – The bodies of two men were located on Tuesday morning after they fell into the St. Johns River on Monday night in Palatka, according to the Palatka Police Department.

Police said around 10:30 a.m., divers from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, along with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Marine Units, located the bodies of Wilbert Rivera Cifuentes, 20, and Deyfri Roblero Morales, 21.

On Monday evening, police said they received a call regarding a possible drowning incident along the St. Johns River at the Palatka Riverfront.

When officers arrived, they learned a group of five to six men had entered the river trying to retrieve an object. During the effort, two men were seen struggling in the water.

The men did not resurface, which immediately prompted a multi-agency search and recovery operation.

“The Palatka Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy,” the agency wrote.
