PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – A former financial adviser could be going to jail for a decade after he was found guilty of committing several crimes against an elderly adult, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office said on Thursday.

According to Uthmeier, Matthew Vincent Muratori took $152,600 from an elderly adult by funneling the money through various digital banking apps, like Cash App and Venmo, and managed to impersonate the victim in phone calls to financial institutions to gain unauthorized access to their accounts.

“This wasn’t just theft—it was betrayal,” Uthmeier said. “This con artist abused his position of trust to drain a vulnerable Floridian’s life savings, and it’s unacceptable.”

Muratori’s illegal behavior occurred from the beginning of 2019 and continued through 2020, the attorney’s office said, adding that the guilty verdict carries a 10-year mandatory minimum prison sentence.

His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 25.
