Toll collection begins on newest stretch of First Coast Expressway between Blanding Boulevard, US 17

First Coast Expressway 2024 - Construction Update (Florida Department of Transportation)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Toll collection starts Monday on the newest portion of the First Coast Expressway.

The highway currently runs from I-10 on Jacksonville’s Westside down to U.S. 17 in Green Cove Springs. The portion between Blanding Boulevard and U.S. 17 is the newest section where toll collections will begin.

Toll rates will vary along the road, so it’s going to be about pricing and how drivers want to pay it.

Drivers can pay with a SunPass or, if they don’t have one, they can pay a bill, which will cost more.

A chart from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) compares prices between SunPass and TOLL-BY-PLATE.

You can also find the information on the FDOT website.

For example, for a two-axle vehicle, Toll-By-Plate costs 49 cents at milepost 43, while SunPass costs 22 cents.

FDOT says the pass can save drivers about 25% compared to TOLL-BY-PLATE.

The Clay County segment of the Expressway includes a new roadway and a bridge over Black Creek, with two projects underway.

The north project (north of State Road 21 to north of State Road 16), costing $229 million, began in 2019 and should wrap up sometime this fall.

The south project (north of State Road 16 to east of County Road 209), costing $180 million, also started in 2019. That is expected to be done by mid-2026.
