Man, 18, dies in head-on crash on SR-16 near Clay High School

As of 10:40 a.m., all lanes of SR-16 were still blocked

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – An 18-year-old man died Wednesday morning in a head-on crash on State Road 16 near Clay High School, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the crash happened around 6:50 a.m. near Randall Road.

According to the FHP report, an 18-year-old driving a sedan was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of SR-16. At the same time, a 38-year-old man driving a pickup truck was traveling westbound.

Troopers said the 18-year-old driver struck the pickup truck’s left rear and continued driving in the wrong way of travel. He then crashed into another pickup truck head-on.

The 18-year-old died at the scene. FHP said he was not a Clay High School student.

According to the report, the driver of the pickup truck, a 21-year-old man from Jacksonville, was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

The 38-year-old driver was not injured.

As of 10:45 a.m., all lanes of State Road 16 were still blocked as troopers worked on investigating and clearing the scene.
