Fleming Island High School marching band chosen as 1 of 2 bands in the world to perform in Madrid’s New Year’s parade

The Golden Eagle will take its talent to Spain in 2027

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – Fleming Island High School’s marching band is taking its talent to Spain.

The Golden Eagle marching band was selected to play in Madrid’s annual New Year’s parade in 2027.

What makes this an even bigger deal is that only one high school band in the world is chosen to perform in that parade each year.

The band got the news about this opportunity a few months ago, but something really special is happening at the school on Friday.

Representatives from Europe are going to be at the high school to “ceremoniously” invite the 150 members of the band to perform in Madrid’s New Year parade in 2027.

Last year, the marching band won the state championship in Jupiter.

Gideon Massey, the woodwind captain, said every single member of the band contributes to that pure sound and of course, playing quality music.

“This program puts in a lot of work, and us getting noticed for that, it’s great, and it is going to be exciting. Everybody has been talking about it. It is really bringing life to our band, and we’re really excited to get out there,” Massey said.

Alex Kirk is not only a trombone player. He is the band’s lieutenant, which means he is the visual captain for choreography. He is the trombone and baritone section leader.

He wears many hats in this band.

“It makes me feel a sense of pride and a sense of excitement because knowing that my band is the one that is chosen to be able to do such a great opportunity is definitely something that I do not take for granted. I am really excited,” Kirk said.

Now, the Golden Eagle marching band is adding a trip to Madrid, Spain, to its résumé.

In the past, the band has been to London, Rome, and played at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Friday’s presentation is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
