Inmate at Columbia County jail found dead inside cell, sheriff’s office says

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate at the county jail was found dead in their cell Friday morning.

According to deputies, James Michael Millard, 64, was found during the morning count and, after life-saving measures were applied, was declared dead by medical crews.

Because the incident is an in-custody death, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will lead the investigation, and all questions about the investigation will be referred to them.

Millard was booked into the jail on Oct. 9 for violating his probation, deputies said.
