Live grenade found in Goodwill donation bin prompts evacuation in Palatka

PALATKA, Fla. – A Goodwill in Palatka was evacuated Thursday after a live hand grenade was discovered inside a donation bin, according to the Palatka Police Department.

Police say officers responded immediately, securing the scene and clearing the building out of an abundance of caution.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called in to assist. Officials say the device was safely retrieved and remotely detonated in a secure location.

Officials are reminding the community to carefully check all items before donating. Hazardous materials such as explosives, firearms, or ammunition should never be included.

If you find a suspicious item like a grenade or explosive device, police say do not touch it. Evacuate the area immediately and contact law enforcement.
