JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Holiday travel is one of the busiest times on Florida’s roads, and agencies like the Florida Department of Transportation work around the clock to ensure a smooth and safe trip for drivers.
News4JAX visited the North Florida Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) on Thursday morning for a behind-the-scenes look at the important work that’s being done 24/7 to ensure road safety.

FDOT Community Outreach Specialist Jacob Pickering said FDOT’s goal is to keep the roads clear and safe for drivers.
“FDOT is always in partnership with law enforcement and all these folks are in this building right now, talking to each other, trying to get dispatch out and really get these crashes cleared, and get them out, and get these roads moving,” Pickering said.
Pickering said FDOT said those traveling for the holidays may notice more road rangers and law enforcement during their drive.
He also emphasized that drivers should always go to FL511.com before they hit the road to know what they can expect, even before they get behind the wheel.
“You’ll see closures, incidents updated in real time,” Pickering said. “You’ll be able to see whether a left lane is blocked, a center lane is blocked, and they update in real time.”
