JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As the holidays approach, many parents are excited to give their children the latest AI-powered toys. But a new report from the U.S. PIRG Education Fund sounds a cautionary note.
The annual “Trouble in Toyland” study reveals that some AI toys can discuss disturbing adult subjects, including sexually explicit content, and even where kids might find weapons at home. While some toys try to deflect these questions or refer children to adults, others give concerning answers.

For example, one chatbot bear offered a detailed explanation on how to light a match and was willing to talk about explicit topics without hesitation.
Another big concern is how addictive these toys can be. Some use game-like rewards to keep kids engaged and even encourage them to keep playing. In one recorded exchange, when a researcher said, “I have to go now,” the toy responded, “That’s OK - I’m ready to go with you. Just let me know where we’re headed.”
The report urges parents to use parental controls on AI toys. Look for features that monitor your child’s interactions, flag concerning topics, and allow you to set time limits to prevent overuse.
The bottom line? Do your homework before buying an AI toy. Know what your child is playing with and make sure it’s safe and appropriate.
