PALATKA, Fla. – Staff at Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School posted a message of condolence on social media this week after a 17-year-old student was fatally shot.
Students returned to class on Tuesday, just days after Lawrence Evans was killed in Palatka. Police said he was shot on Saturday evening by another 17-year-old.

Evans died at the hospital.
On Monday, Palatka High staff shared a post with photos of Evans, saying his “life was taken far too soon.”
“He will be remembered for his brilliant smile and the light it brought to those around him, and our deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and all who loved him during this incredibly difficult time,” the post reads.
Staff members confirmed to News4JAX on Wednesday that grief counselors are being made available for students.
A plan for a memorial has not been announced.
