GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two officers were injured in a shooting in Gainesville on Wednesday morning, according to the Gainesville Police Department.
Officials told News4JAX the suspect involved in the shooting has died.
Around 8 a.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired on E. University Avenue, near Waldo Road.
Police said officers spotted a car and tried to stop the driver, who then got out of the car and started firing on the officers. Additional officers responded and shot the suspect, killing him.
While conducting their investigation, officers found the body of another person in the Imeca Lumber & Hardware store. Police told News4JAX they believe the victim’s death was connected to the initial shots fired.
According to police, the two officers who were shot were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active and there is “no active threat to the public.”
A spokesperson with the University of Florida told News4JAX this incident is not affecting operations at the university, nor are any of their officers involved.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will also respond to the scene to investigate.
