NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the in-custody death of a Nassau County man who accidentally shot himself with a concealed firearm while in the back of a patrol vehicle, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office said just after 12 p.m., deputies made contact with a man who was wanted out of Southwest Florida for stealing a car and had traveled into Yulee.

The suspect was handcuffed and the sheriff’s office said they had a concealed firearm, which discharged in the rear of the deputy’s patrol vehicle, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Nassau County Fire Rescue responded, but the suspect had already died. The deputy involved was not injured.
FDLE will conduct its independent investigation and the sheriff’s office will conduct an internal review and take any appropriate action.
The sheriff’s office said this information is preliminary and the details may change as the investigation continues.
