This Week in Jacksonville: Business Edition - Veteran doctors bring military leadership to healthcare innovation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dr. Kyle Mikals and Dr. Samantha Mikals, both military veterans and board-certified physicians, have launched Jacksonville Concierge Medicine, a boutique healthcare practice focused on personalized care.

Dr. Samantha Mikals credits her military experience for developing creativity and quick decision-making. “In the military, you have to be creative to get projects done, especially overseas,” she said. Dr. Kyle Mikals brings expertise in creating standardized policies from his time managing military clinics, which helps them scale their practice.

After moving from Japan in July, the couple started their “mom and pop” operation offering concierge and direct primary care. Dr. Kyle focuses on internal medicine, while Dr. Samantha provides ENT consultations and esthetic treatments like Botox and radiofrequency collagen therapy.

Dr. Kyle grew up in Jacksonville and chose to return because he wanted a smaller, independent practice outside of large health systems. “Most private practices were owned by big systems, so we wanted something we could control,” he said.

Their approach emphasizes lifestyle medicine, nutrition, and exercise. Those are lessons Dr. Kyle learned living in Japan. Building their business has involved learning new skills like financial planning and patient outreach. “People want human connection, not just ads,” Dr. Kyle said.

Looking ahead, they hope to expand their team with a pediatrician and nurse and acquire a larger clinic space. They also stressed the importance of community support for veterans, especially employers understanding military training commitments.

The Mikals see Jacksonville’s strong medical institutions as a benefit, providing advanced care nearby while they offer personalized, independent services. “It’s nice to have a balance so patients can get the time and attention they need,” Dr. Samantha said.
