OAKLEAF, Fla. – Clay County deputies are investigating a reported hit-and-run crash that injured two children on Monday inside a gated subdivision off Plantation Oaks Boulevard in Oakleaf.
Jalen Roberson said his 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were riding on an electric scooter when they were struck by a white truck, which is believed to be a Dodge Ram pickup.
They said the driver of the truck did not stop to help them.
“I feel like every driver has the responsibility that if they hit something or someone, at least have the decency to stop to make sure they’re OK, especially kids,” said Roberson.
The boy told News4JAX that a nearby worker, who happened to be outside at the time, helped him and his sister. Both children were taken to the hospital to be treated for multiple injuries.
“Fractured elbow, a broken thumb. My daughter’s lip busted. Chin busted. Her face was all scratched up. It was very heartbreaking because no one wants to see their kids hurt or in pain,” said Roberson.
The reported incident happened not far from the entrance gates to the community, where there are surveillance cameras. News4JAX found visual evidence of the crash in that area.
Roberson is still trying to find out if the cameras recorded the crash.
If anyone has information that can help investigators track down the driver responsible for injuring the siblings, they’re urged to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
