Law enforcement K-9 units across US come to St. Augustine for training exercises to enhance effectiveness

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Law enforcement K-9 units from across the United States gathered in St. Augustine for specialized bloodhound training exercises focused on tracking missing persons and suspects.

The training aimed to identify potential issues that could affect a K-9 unit’s effectiveness in real-world tracking scenarios. John Ratliff, a K-9 instructor from the Kanawha Sheriff’s Office in West Virginia, led the exercises.

“Is it a handler issue? Is it a dog issue, or is it a communication issue between the handler and the dog?” Ratliff said, explaining the key aspects they evaluated during training.

While bloodhounds naturally possess strong tracking abilities, Ratliff emphasized the importance of regular training in varied environments to maintain peak performance.

“In order to keep these dogs on point, sharp and focused, and ready to go to complete the mission, you have to hit them with training as often as possible,” he said.

During the exercises, Rex, a search K-9 from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, demonstrated his tracking abilities through multiple successful searches. The training included scenarios where handlers presented their dogs with a scent and directed them to locate hidden subjects at varying distances.

The exercises proved the dogs’ ability to track and locate subjects in different environmental conditions, even when the subjects were concealed in brush or positioned at longer distances from the starting point.

Ratliff noted that successful searches strengthen the bond between dogs and their handlers. “There’s a special place for every find you get,” he said. “Some of my guys back home would better describe it because they talk about how every time my dog gets a find, you can’t knock the smile off my face. I’m that excited.”

The training reinforced the crucial role these K-9 units play in law enforcement, particularly in locating missing persons and apprehending suspects trying to evade capture.
