JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Residents in a Northside neighborhood were shocked to learn about a raid that led to the arrests of 11 men, who were accused of fighting roosters.

A.J. Williams, who is a property owner in the neighborhood, said she never would have suspected what was happening in the backyard of a home on Jake Road.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the men were caught during a raid on Saturday after a neighbor made a complaint about the rooster fighting.

But neighbors pointed to another neighborhood issue that he said needed to be addressed — the loose dogs.

“They’ve been a problem for months,” Williams said. “Had no idea about the chickens.”

Police said 130 chickens were recovered but would have to be euthanized because of their conditions.

Crime and Safety analyst Tom Hackney described the raid as fast and chaotic.

“It’s kind of a shock and awe,” Hackney said. “The faster you do these raids, the less opportunity you give people to react. The faster you do these things, the surgical hits.”
