News4JAX spoke to people who are braving the cold across our region. From sweaters, gloves, to hats and boots, many of us come prepared to enjoy what this cold weather has to offer.
“I feel great, I’m loving the cold weather and the wind, and I wear a uniform a lot all week for long hours, so I like to be free and feel relaxed when I’m around the house. So I got the grandkids today, and we’re just out having fun. They’re bundled up and that’s what’s important,” Kevin Colleti said.
He also said that it’s important to check on your neighbors who are the most vulnerable.
“And you gotta remember homeless people,” Colleti said. “If you see them, give them soup or blankets; they need to get inside and take shelter because it will get freezing, so we do need to be cognitively cautious of our weather,” Colleti said.
Andre Ayoub, the Division Chief for the Duval County Emergency Preparedness Division, emphasized the same message.
“There is a warming center for everybody, so listen, if you don’t have heat, you know, right now is the time,” Ayoub said. “So we’re open from 9 p.m., 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, and this Sunday we’re going to reach single digits, so please don’t be in your house without heat. Transportation is free through JTA. Heed this recommendation and go to our warming center.”
