JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman who was injured in a shooting Wednesday night said that she and two relatives were shot after they went to break up a fight near the intersection of Wisteria Street and Begonia Road.

The woman, who spoke off camera Thursday after leaving the hospital, said she was inside her home when she heard a group of girls fighting outside. She ran to the scene to break up the altercation, she said, and was shot along with two relatives and a 17-year-old.

“The initial investigation shows that a large group of people met up at this location in reference to a fight, to fight each other over a romantic relationship,” Lt. Frederick Dash of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

The woman told News4JAX the shooter was in a gray or silver vehicle that drove off after the shooting. She pointed out braids on the ground that she said had been pulled from the head of one of the teenage girls involved. One relative remained hospitalized with a fractured hip after being struck six times by gunfire, she said.

JSO said this is not the first time the area has seen gun violence. The sheriff’s office told News4JAX that in late December, a woman in her early 20s was shot in the hand by an unidentified woman during a dispute.

A neighbor who asked not to be identified said she was inside her home when she heard a gunshot after hearing a group of women fighting.

The shooter in Wednesday’s incident and the shooter in the December case remain at large, the sheriff’s office said.
