Just before 1 a.m., police were called to the gas station in reference to a shooting.

According to the SAO, after a night of celebrating his birthday, Carter stopped at the gas station. Surveillance footage from the business showed Carter entering and exiting the business.

The video shows that when Carter was standing outside, Mapson and two other men entered the store and stole some items, officials said.

The SAO said during this time, Mapson pulled down his mask and revealed a heart-shaped tattoo on his cheek and his blue-and-white Nike slides.

When they left the store, Carter and the men got into an argument in the parking lot. Mapson then pulled out a gun and shot five times.

The SAO said the video shows Carter fall to the ground and Mapson and another man running away.

Carter was transported to the hospital, where he died.

According to the SAO, the investigation included incriminating social media posts, witness statements, and physical evidence that led to Mapson being the shooter. Mapson was also wearing the same Nike slides when he was arrested months later.

Mapson faces up to 30 years in prison.
