JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A middle school student was taken to a hospital Thursday morning after being stabbed by another student while riding on a school bus in the Grand Park area, according to the Duval County Public Schools’ police chief.
The incident was reported around 9:20 a.m. on Division Street. DCPS told News4JAX the student suspect is in custody.
According to DCPS, initial reports indicate a student riding Bus 268 en route to Matthew Gilbert Middle School was “injured by another student with a knife,” following an altercation.
The school district shared the following message with Matthew Gilbert Middle School families following the incident:
Hello Matthew Gilbert families. This is Duval County Public Schools calling. First and foremost, all students and staff at Matthew Gilbert Middle School are safe. We have been made aware of a serious incident that occurred on Bus 268 involving a physical altercation between two students. During the incident, one student was injured with a knife. The injured student was transported for medical care, and the other student is now in the custody of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The families of the students directly involved have been notified. In addition, school staff are contacting the families of all students who were on the bus so they are aware of what occurred.
This incident did not take place on campus, and there is no threat to the school. Law enforcement continues to investigate, and details remain limited at this time. If there are any updates that impact the broader school community, we will share them promptly.

News4JAX has two crews at the scene and saw a school bus taped off. The bus has since been removed.
Crews also saw a group of children, JSO officers, and other adults gathered nearby. Several parents were seen trying to pick up their children from the parking lot of a gas station.
News4JAX had initially received reports from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department stating that the child was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. However, police told News4JAX that the student’s injuries were non-life-threatening. We are working to confirm the student’s condition.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said while the investigation remains active, there is no ongoing danger to the public, and it appears to be an isolated incident.
