ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Caped crusaders flew through the streets of Orange Park Saturday morning for the annual Superhero 5K & 8K Run.

The event was hosted by 1st Place Sports, benefiting daily operations at Grace Episcopal Day School and drawing more than 1,000 runners for a one-mile fun run, 5K and 8K races.

“It is truly the best day of the year,” said Emma McCabe, the event organizer and director of Development and Communications at Grace Episcopal Day School. “We always say that, but just the runners, the sponsors, the families, the costumes, it’s the most fun day of the year.”

While some heroes don’t wear capes, many participants in Clay County proudly donned theirs.

“I try to be Superdad as much as I can,” Runner Cory Duffy said.

Kingsley Avenue was filled with runners on the streets, taking them along the scenic St. Johns River.

“I ran this race last year. It was about 600 people, so it’s great to see the growth,” Second-place finisher Pornchai Chantha said. “Next year is going to be even bigger.”

The costumes weren’t just for the runners but also the parents, family and friends of the runners cheering them on. The event also honors the heroes of everyday life, whether it’s a cancer survivor, teacher, firefighter or loved one.

“My parents,” McCabe said. “I love them so much.”

Duffy, who was sporting a Superman costume, gave the hero props to the love of his life.

“Absolutely has to be my wife,” Duffy said. “She sacrifices every day to take care of our four kids and make them the best they can be in life.”
