JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating a fatal structure fire that occurred late Friday night.
JSO said patrol officers were called around 11:30 p.m. to the 1600 block of Ionia Street to assist the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department with a structure fire.

After the fire was extinguished, an individual was found deceased inside the building, according to JSO.
JSO said detectives with the Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene and are investigating alongside the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Multiple witnesses have been taken to the Police Memorial Building to be interviewed by detectives, JSO said.
According to JSO, the circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of the fire remain under investigation, and foul play has not been ruled out.
The agency said it will continue to investigate and coordinate with the Medical Examiner’s Office, the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
