Developing Jacksonville’s Southbank: Tennis courts staying, dog park nearing completion and soccer field proposal

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The tennis courts at Southside Park off Hendricks Avenue will remain in place, Jacksonville City Councilman Joe Carlucci said after a community meeting in which residents overwhelmingly opposed moving them.

Carlucci held the meeting last week to gather feedback on four park proposals under consideration for the area. After hearing residents’ concerns, he announced the tennis courts would not be relocated.

A dog park next to the JEA building off Broadcast Place and Prudential Drive is near completion, city officials said. The space is expected to add a local, off-leash option for pet owners once final inspections and openings are complete.

City planners are also weighing a proposal to build soccer fields under the I-95 overpass along Broadcast Place. Officials say repurposing underpass space could create athletic fields and expand recreational opportunities in the neighborhood.

Additional ideas include expanded recreational uses under and near the Fuller Warren Bridge. Officials described the Fuller Warren area as a possible site for passive recreation and programming that would activate underused riverfront space.

Carlucci detailed each of the projects during an interview with Jennifer Waugh on News4JAX+ at 10 a.m.
