‘Doing everything I can’: Nocatee man who suffered brain injury after golf cart crash details his road to recovery

NOCATEE, Fla. – A St. Johns County man suffered a brain injury in early February after he was involved in a golf cart crash, and while he tells News4JAX that he is still recovering, he also admits to struggling with daily tasks.

If you look at his social media, Hobbs built a reputation over the past year as the neighbor who rode his golf cart around the community. His business is called Better Call Joey.

We did.

He answered.

Joey Hobbs spoke about his commitment to patients and neighbors as he works to recover.

“I’m doing everything I can to get back to and be able to provide you know, the same level, if not higher of, you know, a service to this community. It’s been extremely, extremely nice to us. All I can do is pay that forward,” said Hobbs.

Hobbs said the crash happened at the intersection of Valley Ridge Boulevard and Greenleaf Drive, and he was heading toward Lowe’s.

“I was coming home like any other day from doing some work right there at the intersection in front of the neighborhood,” he said.

Joey Hobbs recalled the moments after the collision.

“I remember, just kind of remember it like that. Then coming to, somebody [was] in my face...It’s really kind of rocky after all that.”

Darlene Lane, his partner, described racing to the scene and Hobbs’ initial symptoms.

“I flew up there as quickly as I could, and I arrived just at Saint Thomas paramedics. And I said, what happened? And next thing I know, he was crouching down, telling me he was feeling really dizzy.”

Hobbs said he now has daily doctor appointments and experiences ongoing symptoms. In fact, News4Jax visited him a couple of hours after an appointment where he says he did not score well on a cognitive test. Something he is grappling with.

“It is really hard to describe it. It’s just like, you know, where my ability is ... I get really bad headaches every day.”

He and Lane said they are receiving regular neurological care.

Hobbs and his family have a GoFundMe page to help with medical bills and recovery.

News4JAX is working to obtain the full accident report from the sheriff’s office.
