Workers inside the store told News4JAX the canopy toppled around 2 p.m.
They said no one was hurt, but a car was damaged.
They also said the store remained open.
SnapJAX user David B. shared a photo showing the canopy on the ground next to a white SUV. Viewers also sent in videos of heavy rain, dark skies, and gusty winds as the storms moved through the area.
Chris Harris, a customer who arrived at the station shortly after the damage, said he was shocked by what he saw.
“I came to get an Arizona tea because we’re about to go fishing,” Harris said. “Just came up here and seen this … and we’re just in disbelief.”
Drivers in the area slowed down and stopped to take pictures and video of the scene. A demo crew also stopped by and offered to help.
Across the street, Destiny Carroll said the gas station and the canopy have been there for decades.
“This thing has survived so many storms. Many many hurricanes and I never thought I’d see the day some little wind would be the kicker and it would go,” Carroll said.
Residents in the area said the wind was howling through the neighborhood.
Carroll said the intense downpours during her drive home made it difficult to see other cars on the road.
“It was bad. Can’t see,” she said. “Could hardly see the lights of the other car right in front of you.”
