Smart devices are everywhere, in our pockets, in our living rooms, even in our cars!
But as more of our lives go digital, experts warn that the data these devices collect may be far more extensive and far more personal than many people realize.
Privacy surveys show more than half of consumers don’t trust smart devices to protect their personal data, and nearly three-quarters worry their information is used without their permission.
Smart TVs, smart speakers and smartphones, the average American home has roughly 17 connected devices.
Cookies, pixels and digital fingerprints follow users from site to site, and many people don’t realize they’ve already agreed to it.
“Everybody just clicks on the agreements and says, ‘Oh, yes, I accept everything,’” said James Thompson, President and CEO of Tech Bay USA.
Experts say you can limit online tracking by adjusting browser privacy settings and reviewing app permissions.
Smart TVs track what you watch, for how long, what apps you use and even when you pause or rewind. And that data is sold or shared with advertisers.
Other things that are tracking your every move:
- Smart speakers
- Security cameras
- Thermostats
- Smart appliances
These can all collect data about daily routines and when you’re home or away.
“You’ll have specific information for you and about yourself related to your race, your age,” explained Thompson.
Experts recommend disabling ad tracking settings on smart TVs and limiting device permissions.
And don’t forget about your cars.
Modern vehicles collect location data, driving behavior, speed, braking and even in-car app use and your phone contacts.
That data can be used for navigation, safety features, and insurance discounts, but it can also be shared, sold, or used to profile drivers.
Experts say drivers should pay close attention to what they agree to when connecting apps or phones to their car.
Also, be aware that apps you don’t use anymore, including store loyalty programs, can still be tracking you, your location and device data. So, be sure to delete apps not just from your home screen, but from your device completely.
