JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Officers were shot at Monday night but not injured as they chased two men on foot from a traffic stop through an Eastside neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Cmdr. Jordan Dowling with JSO’s Specialized Investigations division said a person fired several shots at the officers from inside a home as they ran down the street. Investigators do not believe that the shooter is connected to the two who ran from the traffic stop.

Dowling said the incident began around 10:55 p.m. Monday with a traffic stop at the intersection of East 26th and Haines streets.

Officers said two young men inside the vehicle got out and ran from the traffic stop, and officers chased them about one-fifth of a mile to East 28th Street.

“While they were chasing the occupants of the vehicle, they started receiving gunfire from a residence, and that turned their attention to that threat, and they addressed that threat,” Dowling said.

One of the two who ran from the vehicle was able to get away, and the other was caught, Dowling said.

He said multiple shots were fired from inside the home, but the officers were not hit, and they do not have any reports of buildings or vehicles being hit by the gunfire either.

Dowling said officers surrounded the home the shots had been fired from and ordered everyone inside to come out. They did and were taken into custody without further incident, Dowling said.

“We do not believe that the occupants of the residence and the occupants of the vehicle are associated,” Dowling said.
