LAKE CITY, Fla. – The Lake City Police Department said Friday that officers have responded to 14 vehicle burglaries so far this year and are urging residents to lock their cars and secure their property.

The department said most incidents occurred during overnight and early morning hours and many took place in residential areas, including apartment complexes. In a number of cases, vehicles showed no signs of forced entry; owners reported doors had been left unlocked or valuables were left in plain view, including electronics and wallets.

Suspects appear to be moving through neighborhoods and parking areas, checking door handles and taking items of opportunity, the department said.

Chief Gerald Butler said the crimes are preventable.

“Lock your vehicle doors, remove valuables from plain view, and report any suspicious activity immediately. A few seconds of prevention can stop a crime from occurring,” Butler said.

The department advised residents to:

  • Lock all vehicle doors every time you park.
  • Remove valuables or keep them out of sight.
  • Never leave firearms or wallets in vehicles.
  • Park in well-lit areas when possible.
  • Secure homes, garages and outbuildings.
  • Report suspicious persons or activity immediately.
