JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was found in the front yard of a home on Justin Road around 10:35 a.m. Monday, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
She later died from her injuries at the hospital.
JSO Sgt. Kyle Matthews said an infant that was inside the home at the time of the shooting was not hurt and is being cared for by the JSO Victims Services team.
While on the scene, News4JAX reporter Briana Brownlee and photojournalist Jesse Hanson noticed JSO carrying off what appeared to be a baby in a carrier.
The scene is at the intersection of Justin Road and Small Way, which is west of I-295 and south of Herlong Road.
Matthews said a woman who was at the scene when officers arrived has been detained as a person of interest in the shooting and is being questioned downtown.
“We do believe this to be an isolated incident, so we don’t believe that there are any dangers to the community at this time,” Matthew said.
The circumstances of the shooting and the relationships of those involved are still under investigation, Matthews said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact JSO at 904-630-0500 or CrimeStopper at 1-866-845-TIPS.
Shooting raises concerns
Neighbors say they didn’t hear any gunshots, but saw the police presence. Rhonda Littles was visiting a friend with her daughter when she saw the ambulances and JSO cruisers.
“What happened in the neighborhood, because it’s usually so quiet,” Littles said. “They blocked off the streets so nobody can really find out what went on in the home.”
Littles and her daughter questioned what could have possibly happened in the morning. She added that she saw someone being taken off in the ambulance.
“Just stop the violence,” Littles said. “It was quite disturbing to see that many cops and ambulances because you heard it for at least 30 minutes. That is what drew a lot of attention to it. Can’t even get coffee or a bagel without a disturbance in the neighborhood. It’s just too much.”
