if you’re heading out the door — slow down right away and give yourself extra space. Experts recommend increasing your following distance to at least three to five seconds.

Be careful to avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, which can lead to hydroplaning. If your car starts to feel like it’s sliding, ease off the gas — don’t slam on the brakes.

You’ll also want to avoid standing water, when possible, since puddles can hide potholes or cause you to lose control.

And don’t forget — turn on your headlights so other drivers can see you and try to stay in the tire tracks of the car ahead for better traction.

The bottom line — take it slow and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going safely.
