Remembering former WJXT reporter & anchor John Thomas

John Thomas, who held several roles with the WJXT news team from the 1960s through the 1980s, passed away earlier this month at age 90.

According to his obituary, he started at Channel 4 in 1963, launching what would be an 18-year tenure at the station. He started as a reporter, later serving as 11 p.m. anchor, station news director, and director of public affairs.

He later spent 14 years with Florida Public Broadcasting, hosting programs including “Florida Crossroads” and “Today in the Florida Legislature.” Thomas worked in broadcasting in Wilmington, N.C. and Savannah before to coming to WJXT.

Prior to his journalism career, Thomas served in the U.S. Navy, touring Europe with the U.S. Navy Band, and was also stationed aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga at one point. The carrier was stationed at Naval Station Mayport, giving Thomas, a native of North Carolina, his introduction to Northeast Florida.

Thomas recounted some of his career in an oral history interview with the Jacksonville Broadcasters Association, which included his advice for those entering journalism.

His love for playing music began in high school, continued through his Navy service, and lasted well into his adult life. According to his obituary, he performed as a jazz pianist at numerous spots around Jacksonville, and led The John Thomas Trio. He also had opportunities to share the stage with jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy DeFranco, Russell George, and Teddy Washington.

Thomas is survived by his wife Dana Ratterree Thomas and numerous other family members. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
