JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville city council member has introduced a bill that would send more than $143,000 toward the rehabilitation of Historic Stanton School on Ashley Street.
Councilman Rahman Johnson introduced Ordinance 2026-0260 two weeks ago. The bill would appropriate $143,710 from the general fund’s operating reserves to help restore the former high school building, which sits vacant in downtown Jacksonville.

Stanton High School opened in 1869 as the Stanton Normal School, giving it more than 150 years of history in the Jacksonville community. Historic Stanton Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is leading efforts to restore the building.
Renovation work is already underway — roof truss repairs are in progress, old windows are being replaced, and portions of old drywall have been removed.
The bill is expected to move through city council.
