Columbia County inmate dies after medical emergency

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – An inmate at the Columbia County jail died Tuesday morning after suffering a medical emergency, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate, who was housed in the facility’s medical ward, went into medical distress around 9 a.m. Medical and detention staff immediately began life-saving measures and continued until Columbia County Fire and EMS arrived to assist.

The inmate died at the hospital.

The sheriff’s office said no foul play was suspected.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating since it was an in-custody death.
