JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a man is in surgery after a firearm discharged inside a home near Shamrock Avenue South in North Jacksonville Monday morning.
Officers responded to a local hospital around 9:45 a.m. after reports of a shooting victim. They found an adult man in his late 20s with a single gunshot wound to his torso. He is listed in critical condition.

What investigators say happened
Preliminary investigation indicates the victim and his cousin were trying to make a firearm safe inside their home near the 300 block of Shamrock Avenue South when the gun fired once, striking the victim in the torso, according to JSO Sgt. Sembach of the Robbery and Violent Crime Unit.
A witness drove the victim to the hospital.
The victim’s brother and the witness were detained at the scene. Both are cooperating with detectives, JSO said.
Active investigation underway
Crime Scene Detectives are processing the scene for evidence. Detectives with the Robbery and Violent Crime Unit are interviewing witnesses, canvassing for surveillance video, and following up on leads.
Investigators believe the incident is isolated and say there is no ongoing threat to the community.
