JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced it has wrapped up a long-term narcotics operation with significant results — 87 people arrested, illegal drugs seized, and weapons taken off downtown streets.
Operation LERP, led by JSO’s Narcotics Unit, targeted those trafficking and distributing drugs throughout Jacksonville’s Urban Core and downtown corridor. Several of those arrested were accused of selling dangerous drugs near schools and churches.
The operation is not fully closed. JSO has 12 active arrest warrants outstanding for individuals identified during the investigation. Once those suspects are taken into custody, the total number of dealers and traffickers arrested will reach 99.
Authorities say illegal drug activity poses a direct threat to those who live and work in downtown Jacksonville. JSO officials also say such activity undermines ongoing revitalization efforts across the Urban Core.
Operation LERP was funded through the State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication — or SAFE — Grant.
The operation appears to be named after an infamous statue design for Riverfront Plaza that featured a giant chrome ‘Jax’ statue. Many critics thought it looked more like the word ‘lerp’.
