Ways to save money at the pump

AAA recommends several ways drivers can improve fuel economy:

  • Slow down and avoid hard acceleration. Driving above 50 mph can significantly reduce fuel economy, while “jackrabbit” starts use more gas.
  • Keep tires properly inflated. Underinflated tires reduce fuel economy and can affect handling and braking.
  • Avoid unnecessary idling. If stopped for more than 60 seconds, AAA says shutting off the engine can save fuel.
  • Combine errands and avoid heavy traffic when possible.
  • Remove unnecessary weight and roof racks when they are not being used.
  • Use the most fuel-efficient vehicle available for each trip.
  • Maintain the vehicle according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and address a Check Engine light promptly.
  • Check the owner’s manual before buying premium fuel. AAA research found premium gasoline provides no added benefit unless it is recommended or required by the vehicle manufacturer.
