JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Online retail giant Amazon plans to hire over 4,000 people in Jacksonville, and they're using “Amazon Day” to help. The two days of the event are Wednesday and Friday.
Two Jacksonville Amazon fulfillment centers are already under construction, one in North Jacksonville near International Airport Boulevard and another in the Cecil Park Commerce Center. Amazon also plans to open a delivery station and a 237,053-square-foot Westside Industrial Park warehouse, according to the Daily Record.
The event aims to inform the public of the hiring. Interested applicants may apply from home by visiting amazondelivers.jobs.
Marvin Akins said finding a job has been difficult, but he's hopeful he could snag one of the Amazon positions. He said his unemployment check isn't enough to cover his bills.
"It's hard, but you got to keep trying,” Akins said. "It's going to be a good thing for the environment and also people with families to take care of."
A number of local employment organizations are assisting job-seekers that need computer access, including Transforming Communities
"We are fulfilling the needs of economic development, giving the residents job opportunities to better themselves and their families,” Transforming Communities executive director Tameka Holly said. “JTA has placed a bus stop on the north campus of Amazon."
New hires could start work as soon as August.
"It'll be a stepping stone,” Akins said.
