FBI: White powder mailed to federal courthouse not dangerous

Hazmat clears scene at courthouse; FBI says no one in danger

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Field tests on white powder found Tuesday morning in a letter at the U.S. Courthouse in Downtown Jacksonville found no dangerous substances, according to the FBI.

The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department Hazmat team, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad and Homeland Security agents responded about 8:15 a.m. Authorities believed the public threat was very low and there were no evacuations and the courthouse remained open throughout the investigation.

Streets around the courthouse were closed for three hours while firefighters in Hazmat suits took precautions until test results were completed about 11 a.m. showing there was no danger.

The FBI will not talk about how the letter arrived, what it said and if there was any threat made. Agents said that remains under investigation.

"The FBI appreciates the assistance of our law enforcement partners in this matter, and will continue to work with them as the investigation progresses.  No additional details can be confirmed at this time," FBI spokeswoman Amanda Warford Videll said in a statement.
