Hotels booking up quickly as Irma nears Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Local hotels are booking up fast as Hurricane Irma nears Florida.

On Tuesday night, News4Jax stopped by several hotels in south Jacksonville, asking about room reservations. All of those hotels were booked to capacity throughout the weekend.

There were no more rooms available for this weekend at the Holiday Inn Express near J. Turner Butler Boulevard in Jacksonville.

The hotel manager, Austin Horne, said people from South Florida are planning to head this way and there's no more space.

"We're sold out Saturday through Monday and almost Friday," Horne said. "It'll probably be sold out by the end of the night."

It was the same story for many of the hotels along Salisbury Road.

"All the other hotels that we send people to, like Indigo and other hotels like that, most of the ones up and down the streets except for the Marriott are sold out too," Horne said.

As people from South Florida are heading to the Northeast Florida area, Horne offered a suggestion.

"If you're thinking about getting a hotel, reserve it now and cancel it before 6 p.m. that day because then there's no cancellation fee -- because we are selling out quick," Horne said.

If you are headed north to Georgia, it's likely the same scenario, so book your room now.
