Woman says grandson almost drowned at Jacksonville park

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville woman said her 18-year-old grandson almost drowned Wednesday evening while swimming at a park on the city's Southside.

Police and paramedics were called to the park near Belfort and Touchton roads for a drowning call shortly after 8 p.m., according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office incident report.

The heavily-redacted report said an unnamed individual was given CRP at the park and taken to an area hospital in an unspecified conditon. Few other details were released by police.

According to the woman who contacted News4Jax, her grandson was fishing with friends when they jumped into the retention pond for a swim. At some point, she said, he had an asthma attack.

She told News4Jax a friend was able to pull her grandson out of the water and dial 911. She said he was taken to St. Vincent's, where he's stable but still in the intensive care unit.
