New report says 1 in 5 cars in the US has unresolved recalls. Here’s how to find out if yours is one of them

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Roughly 1 in 5 cars on the road in the United States has unresolved recalls, including with critical systems like brakes, airbags and seatbelts, according to a new report from CARFAX.

The report found more than 58 million cars have at least one recall that remains unaddressed — that’s 16 percent more than when the last study was conducted two years ago. 

  • More than 14 million have two or more unaddressed recalls
  • As for cars with two or more recalls, Florida and Georgia are among the top five states
  • In Florida, more than 900,000 vehicles have more than one recall
  • In Georgia, the number is nearly 510,000
  • Texas leads the nation with 1.6 million

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration,  the cars with the most recalls issued last year were made by Chrysler, Ford, BMW, General Motors and Mercedes-Benz.
