Jackknifed big rig on Dames Point Bridge causes traffic delays

A jackknifed tractor-trailer closed all northbound lanes of the Dames Point Bridge on Thursday afternoon.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – All northbound lane of the Dames Point Bridge reopened about two hours after a tractor-trailer jackknifed Thursday afternoon.

Other vehicles were also involved in the crash, which happened just before 2 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. All lanes reopened just before 4 p.m.

All lanes were initially closed, and then one lane reopened about 3 p.m. About 45 minutes later, all lanes were once again closed and traffic was being diverted to Merrill Road.

Troopers said the big rig crashed into a vehicle that was trying to avoid a disabled car on the shoulder.

Jim Weisflog had to be at the airport in 45 minutes to catch his flight to St. Louis.

"All I can do is wait and hope it clears up in the next 10 to 20 minutes," he said.

One man said he had to pick up his son for his daughter's wedding.

"I'm probably going to miss my flight," a driver named Reba said.

Earlier in the afternoon, a Target tractor-trailer jackknifed on two lanes of Interstate 95 northbound near Edgewood Avenue.

And a TG Lee Foods Inc. big rig crashed on County Road 309 in Satsuma in Putnam County on Thursday morning, closing the road for about six hours. The driver suffered only minor injuries.
